Oakland sweeps the Bay Bridge World Series!
Congrats to Sam East on capturing his first USBLM title, well deserved Sammy.
Here's a recap:
Game One from Oakland Wade Davis of Oakland and Matt Cain from San Francisco were tabbed as the Game 1 starters for each squad and neither disappointed. The 2 were locked in a scoreless pitcher duel for 6-plus innings. Oakland scored in the last half of the 7th on a 2-run homer by Sean Dolittle. That turned out to be the games only runs. Davis scattered 7 hits over 8 innings and Joey Devine came in to close it out in the 9th. Cain only gave up 4 hits but the San Francisco offense left their bats across the bay. They stranded 9 runners for the game and Oakland comes out on top for a 1-0 Series lead.
Game Two from Oakland In Game 2, Barry Zito took the hill for the Giants and Brett Anderson countered for Oakland. Much like Game One, this one resulted in another pitchers duel--until the last half of the 7th when Oakland exploded for 7 runs to take a 9-3 lead. San Francisco was able to get one back in the 8th but Oakland scored 5 more in the 8th to put the game out of reach. The final score ended up 14-4 as the Giant bullpen gave up 12 runs. Conor Jackson wielded the big bat for Oakland, going 5 for 6 and knocking in 5 runs. He only needed a double for the cycle. His homer came in the big 7th inning in which Dan Uggla crushed a Grand Slam off of Chad Qualls. Anderson got the win and Qualls took the loss in this one. The Giants stranded 10 more base runners in this one and Oakland did what they were supposed to do: winning the first 2 games at home.
Game Three from San Francisco The Giants come to their own ballpark licking their wounds from the Series' first 2 games. They need to mount a comeback and quickly. Sending Tim Lincecum to the mound was the way to get things started...or so they thought. Oakland picked up where they left off and scored 3 in the first as Lincecum's nerves were clearly evident. Robert Perry provided the big blow as he hit a 3-run homer with no one out in the 1st. San Fran got on the board in the 2nd on a solo homer by Adam Witter and both pitchers, Trevor Cahill for Oakland, settled in. It was fairly quiet until the 6th when Sean Dolittle got the Athletics another run with a solo homer. They got 2 more in the 7th when Dolittle homered once again, this time a 2-run bomb. San Francisco added another run in the 9th but it was too little, too late as Oakland now holds a commanding 3-0 Series lead.
Game Four from San Francisco The Oakland Athletics are in the drivers seat, holding a 3-0 Series lead. The San Francisco Giants have yet to put up much of a fight as Oakland has beaten them in every facet of the game. The G-men send Tim Alderson to the mound to face the playoff savvy Josh Beckett of Oakland. The A's got on the board first once again scoring 2 runs in the 2nd on a single by Alex Romero scoring Sean Dolittle and Hunter Pence. Oakland added another in the 6th when Dolittle led off with a triple. After Pence stuck out, J.R. Towles singled in Dolittle. The Giant faithful were beginning to get impatient as the boos cascaded down. Where was the San Francisco offense? They finally woke up in the 7th scoring 2 runs to narrow the Oakland lead to 1. Cody Ross stole 2nd after a single and then on attempted steal of 3rd, the throw sailed into leftfield allowing him to score. The 2nd run came on a pinch-hit single by Mike McBryde. That's where the score stayed, 3-2, and in the 9th the Giants went quietly to end the game and the Series, giving Oakland their first USBLM crown. Sean Dolittle was named the Series MVP
